How to Get Cited by Perplexity
Perplexity treats search like a research engine — citing sources for nearly every answer. Here's how to make sure those sources include your Hawaii brand.

Perplexity Is a Citation-First Engine
Where ChatGPT defaults to a clean conversational answer with citations as an option, Perplexity does the opposite. Every answer it generates carries visible source citations — usually four to seven, numbered and linkable. That structural choice makes Perplexity the most concrete “AI engine to rank in” among the major LLMs: if you can identify which sources it cites for the queries you care about, you can engineer your way into that set.
For Hawaii businesses, that’s actionable. The queries your buyers run on Perplexity — “best dive shop Kona,” “Maui wedding photographer recommendations,” “Hawaii small business tax filing” — are citation-rich, and the sources Perplexity picks are visible. Your job is to be one of them.
How Perplexity Picks Sources
Three layers govern source selection:
Live web retrieval. Unlike training-data-bound models, Perplexity browses the web in real time for most queries. Freshness, indexability (your site needs to be crawlable), and current relevance matter directly.
Community-driven authority. Perplexity is notably willing to cite Reddit threads, Yelp reviews, and forum discussions for “best-of” and “recommendations” queries — because those carry genuine human consensus. A Hawaii business with no Reddit presence and minimal Yelp activity loses out to one embedded in those conversations.
Subject authority. For technical, factual, or expertise-heavy queries, Perplexity weighs editorial authority — professional associations, government data, established trade publications, credentialed expert sites. For background on the underlying discipline, see What Is GEO? and GEO vs AEO.
Six Tactics to Earn Perplexity Citations
- Make your site crawlable and fast. Perplexity browses live; if your site is slow, JS-heavy, or blocks crawlers, you’re invisible. Verify
robots.txtpermits LLM user-agents and pages return clean HTML. - Build a real Reddit presence. Reddit is unusual in that Perplexity cites it heavily for opinion-and-recommendation queries. Authentic representation in r/Hawaii, r/Honolulu, r/Maui, and niche subreddits for your category disproportionately raises citation odds. This is community engagement, not promotional spam — the latter gets you banned.
- Treat Yelp and Google Reviews as a search asset. Volume + recency + responses-to-reviews factor into the social proof Perplexity cites. Active review management is AI-search work, not just reputation management.
- Publish question-led, sourced content. Perplexity’s “research engine” framing rewards content that itself cites authoritative sources. A page that answers “Hawaii statute of limitations for personal injury” and links to the actual Hawaii Revised Statutes carries more weight than the same answer without citations.
- Get into industry/professional databases. Bar associations, AMA directories, trade-group rosters, BBB records — Perplexity cites these for credentialed queries. NAP consistency + active participation, mostly.
- Watch your citations and amplify the patterns. Perplexity shows you exactly which sources it cited. Reverse-engineer: if it cites three particular publications for Hawaii X, those are the three places worth being mentioned in.
A Hawaii Example
A North Shore surf school wanting to be cited when somebody asks Perplexity “best surf lessons North Shore Oahu” needs: an indexable, fast, schema-marked site; genuine presence on r/Hawaii and r/surfing (real conversations, not promotional drops); a current Yelp presence with responses to reviews; a mention or two in established surf publications or Hawaii visitor media; a Wikipedia-grade About page an LLM can quote. Each on its own is necessary; none alone is sufficient.
Measuring Perplexity Performance
Because Perplexity shows its citations, manual sampling is more diagnostic here than for any other engine. Run the queries your buyers run, and log: which sources Perplexity cites, whether your brand is among them, and what source format the citation took (your own page, a review, a third-party article). Tools like Profound, Otterly.AI, and Siftly automate parts of this at scale. Our Hawaii AI Search Visibility Index tracks this for a focused query set.
The Bottom Line
Perplexity is the most transparent of the major AI engines — what it cites is visible, and the patterns are learnable.
