The AI Search Guide: GEO and AEO
How AI assistants and answer engines choose the sources they cite, how to optimize for featured snippets and voice search, and the work that helps a Hawaii business compete to be the answer.
AEO, GEO and Traditional SEO
The AI Search Revolution Is Here
The way people discover businesses is fundamentally changing. When a potential customer asks an AI assistant “Who is the best digital marketing agency in Honolulu?” - your brand needs to be in the running to be the answer.
This is not about gaming algorithms. It is about building genuine authority that AI engines recognize and trust. If you are wondering how GEO compares to traditional search optimization, our guide on GEO vs SEO and what you need to know breaks down the key differences. Want to see where your site stands? AEO and Traditional SEO
Traditional Organic SEO optimizes for ranking — getting your page into Google’s top organic results so users click through. AEO optimizes for being the answer — your content gets quoted directly inside the search results page (featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews) and read aloud by voice assistants, often without any click required. The two strategies share infrastructure but target different surfaces.

GEO and AEO
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimizes for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude that synthesize answers from across the web — citation, not click, is the win. AEO optimizes for direct-answer surfaces inside traditional search engines: featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistant responses, and Google’s AI Overviews. The platforms differ; the underlying authority signals overlap.

How Does Bing AI / Microsoft Copilot Rank Differently From Google AI Overviews?
Bing’s Copilot (formerly Bing Chat) and Microsoft 365 Copilot draw from Bing’s index plus GPT-4-class synthesis — they weight named entity authority and crawlable structured data more heavily than Google AI Overviews, which currently blend Google’s Knowledge Graph, traditional ranking signals, and Gemini synthesis. Practical implication: a brand with strong Schema.org entity infrastructure (Organization, Person, Place) often appears in Copilot before it appears in Google AI Overviews.
We measure both surfaces separately because the gap is real: a page that wins Google AI Overview citations may not win Copilot citations and vice versa. Our Hawaii AI Search Visibility Index documents the open methodology we use to measure across these surfaces — the published benchmark baselines on Claude, with multi-engine coverage on request — so we can show which surfaces cite a business and which need different content angles. The Reef Citation Index then tracks how often Hawaii businesses are actually cited by vertical — on Anthropic Claude in the published benchmark, and on ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini on request. It is the published research behind our AEO work, and the reason we can prove answer-engine visibility rather than just claim it.
Which AI engines does your GEO strategy cover?
We optimize for all major AI search platforms including ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, Claude, Google AI Overviews (formerly SGE), Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. Our strategy is platform-agnostic, building the fundamental authority signals that all AI engines look for.
How AI Engines Decide Who to Cite
AI language models do not rank websites the way Google does. They synthesize information from across the web, evaluating entity authority, topical depth, E-E-A-T signals, structured data and source consistency.
Our AI Search Playbook walks through how AI engines retrieve and cite content, step by step, and Part II of The AI Search Manual covers the same ground in depth.
The Content Framework for AI Search
Conversational Query Research
We identify the exact questions your target audience asks across Google, voice assistants, and AI platforms. We map these to search intent and prioritize based on volume, competition, and conversion potential. This research drives every piece of content we create.
AI Visibility Baseline
We begin by querying your brand across every major AI platform - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. We document exactly how and where you appear, identify competitors who are being cited, and map the gaps between your current presence and where you need to be. Our Hawaii AI Search Visibility Index documents the methodology and a published benchmark dataset of citation patterns across hospitality, real estate, healthcare, and weddings.
Entity & Authority Architecture
We build an entity map that defines your brand’s relationship to key concepts, services, and locations. This becomes the blueprint for content that AI engines can confidently attribute to your business. We align your structured data, knowledge graph presence, and content architecture to reinforce your entity authority. The discipline that fuels all of this — earning citations and building topical depth — is laid out in our content marketing guide.
Answer-First Content Architecture
Traditional content buries the answer deep in the page. AEO-optimized content leads with a clear, concise answer in the first paragraph, then expands with supporting detail. We restructure existing content and create new pages using formats that search engines prefer for direct answers.
Content Engineering at Scale
Every piece of content we create is engineered for AI citation. This means deep topical coverage, proper entity mentions, schema markup, and the kind of authoritative depth that AI systems weight heavily. We do not produce thin content - we build comprehensive resources that become the sources AI engines draw from. That same structural discipline extends to the site itself — see how we built Nekko’s own AI-readable site manifest.
Ongoing Monitoring and Optimization
We track featured snippet wins and losses weekly, identify new snippet opportunities as they emerge, and continuously refine content to maintain and expand your answer engine presence. AEO is a living strategy that evolves with search behavior.
AI engines evolve constantly. We track your citation performance across platforms monthly, identify new citation opportunities, and refine our strategy based on real performance data. This is not a set-it-and-forget-it service.
Schema and Platform Requirements
How Does FAQPage Schema Relate to AEO?
FAQPage schema is one of the highest-leverage AEO signals because it explicitly tells search engines “here are the Q&A pairs on this page, ready for extraction.” It no longer produces a rich result in Google, but valid FAQPage markup still helps Google understand your questions and answers, because it removes ambiguity about what’s a question and what’s the answer.
That said, FAQPage isn’t a shortcut. Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites in 2023, then stopped showing them in Search on May 7, 2026, so the markup no longer produces a rich result for any site. It still helps Google understand your questions and answers, and the FAQ it describes should be visible on the page. We implement FAQPage alongside QAPage and SpeakableSpecification schemas as a layered approach — the goal isn’t gaming the markup, it’s making genuine Q&A content cleanly machine-readable.
Can My Agency Do GEO Without Changing Platforms?
Yes — GEO is platform-agnostic. We work on WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace, custom CMS, and headless builds. The core GEO deliverables (schema markup, entity infrastructure, structured content production, knowledge-graph claims) ship through whatever publishing system you already use. We don’t require migration to a specific stack.
The exception: if your current platform makes JSON-LD schema injection difficult or limits the structured data formats you can publish, we’ll flag that during onboarding and offer either a workaround (proxy edge injection, schema-only middleware) or a recommendation to migrate. For most Shopify and WordPress sites, no platform change is needed — see our Shopify SEO for Hawaii businesses guide for how GEO ships on that stack specifically.
How Do I Measure GEO Success? What Metrics Matter?
GEO success is measured across four metrics: (1) citation count — how often AI engines reference your brand in answers; (2) citation accuracy — whether the cited content reflects your positioning correctly; (3) citation share-of-voice vs. competitors in your category; (4) downstream effects — branded search lift, direct-traffic increase, and assisted conversions from AI-referred sessions.
We track all four through a citation panel that queries ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews on the buyer questions that matter for your category.
AI Search for Hawaii Businesses
Local businesses in Hawaii benefit enormously from AEO because many local queries are question-based: “Where is the best lunch in Waikiki?”, “How much does SEO cost in Honolulu?”, “What digital marketing services are available on Oahu?” Competing for these answers is the work that positions your business as a local authority. The same dynamic drives high-stakes decisions like school choice — parents ask “What’s the best private school in Honolulu?” or “top-rated schools near me” — which is why answer-engine visibility sits at the center of our Hawaii education marketing practice.
The combination of AEO and Local SEO creates a powerful flywheel: your answers drive visibility, visibility drives trust, and trust drives more answer placements.
Hawaii’s business landscape is uniquely positioned for GEO impact. With a concentrated market and strong local identity, businesses that establish AI authority early will capture disproportionate visibility as AI search adoption accelerates. The window to establish first-mover advantage is narrow.
Tourism-driven queries, local service searches, and professional services in Hawaii are already being influenced by AI recommendations. Businesses that wait for GEO to become mainstream will find themselves playing catch-up against competitors who invested early.
What Are Featured Snippets and Why Do They Matter?
Featured snippets are the highlighted answer boxes that appear at the top of Google search results, often called “Position Zero.” They come in several formats:
- Paragraph Snippets: A direct text answer to a question, typically 40-60 words
- List Snippets: Numbered or bulleted lists pulled from your content
- Table Snippets: Data organized in table format from your page
- Video Snippets: Video content that directly answers a query
Winning a featured snippet means your content appears above all organic results, dramatically increasing visibility and click-through rates. For voice searches, the featured snippet is typically the only result read aloud to the user.
Voice Search and Voice Assistants
Voice search is reshaping how people find local businesses. When someone asks their phone “What is the best SEO agency near me?” or tells their smart speaker “Find a web designer in Honolulu,” the device reads a single answer. That answer comes from featured snippets and structured data.
Should I Optimize for Voice Assistants (Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant) the Same Way?
Mostly yes — voice assistants pull answers from the same featured-snippet and structured-data sources that AEO already targets, with a few divergences. Google Assistant reads featured snippets verbatim (a strong AEO page wins both surfaces); Siri pulls primarily from Apple’s curated sources and Knowledge Graph integrations; Alexa skews to Bing-indexed featured snippets for general queries and Amazon-specific sources for commercial intent.
Differences worth optimizing for: voice queries are longer and more conversational (“Where can I find a Hawaii hotel marketing agency that handles AI search?” vs. typed “Hawaii hotel marketing AI search”), so content needs to match conversational phrasing. Add SpeakableSpecification schema on the sections you want assistants to read aloud — it explicitly tells Google Assistant “this passage is the speakable answer.” Most service-business AEO engagements address Google Assistant first because it has the largest installed base; Alexa and Siri optimization is a secondary deliverable when category demand justifies it.
Will AEO Cannibalize My Organic Clicks?
Sometimes — and that trade-off is usually worth it. Winning a featured snippet often reduces clicks to the underlying page because the user got the answer in the snippet. But snippet wins also lift visibility for the broader keyword family, drive branded search later in the funnel, and capture voice-search and AI-citation surfaces that pure organic ranking can’t reach.
The math favors AEO when: (1) your content is genuinely the best answer (sustaining the snippet through Google’s quality updates), (2) your brand benefits from being recognized as the authoritative source even without a click, and (3) your downstream conversion paths (direct traffic, branded search, AI citations) capture the value the click would have. For commodity transactional queries where the click is the transaction, AEO trades click volume for citation volume — and that’s the right move for most service businesses.
Zero Citations and Timelines
Will GEO Work if My Brand Has Zero Existing Online Citations?
Yes, but the timeline is longer. A brand with no existing AI citations starts at zero share-of-voice — the engagement first builds the foundational entity infrastructure (Organization and Person schema, knowledge-graph claims on Wikidata and Crunchbase, LinkedIn and industry-directory presence), then layers in content that AI engines can attribute and synthesize. Most of the first 60–90 days of work goes into that foundation.
A focused service business usually starts with Person and Organization schema, knowledge-graph hygiene, and an AI-citation baseline; businesses with several services, locations, or named experts add expert-bylined content, original research, and measurement across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude.
What accelerates the curve: existing earned media (press mentions, podcast appearances, conference talks), named experts with credible bylines, and original research or proprietary data that other sources cite. What slows it: a thin team page, generic content without named authors, and no verifiable third-party mentions.
How Long Does It Take to Build Toward Consistent ChatGPT Citation?
Consistent ChatGPT citation — meaning your brand appears in the majority of relevant queries, not just occasionally — has no fixed timeline. The first 60–90 days of work go into the foundational entity layer, but “consistent” requires the topical authority layer to compound: enough cited content, enough cross-references, and enough third-party validation that the model’s underlying training data and retrieval indexes converge on your brand as a credible source.
ChatGPT’s behavior varies by engine version (GPT-4o vs. GPT-5 cite differently) and by retrieval mode (browsing-enabled vs. closed-book). We measure across both modes monthly and report on which engine versions are citing you, which aren’t yet, and what content gaps are closing the delta.
